As a Virginia-based photographer, I’m lucky to be surrounded by a rich blend of natural beauty, historic charm, and architectural elegance. Whether I’m capturing portraits, engagements, or creative sessions, these locations never fail to inspire. If you’re looking for the perfect backdrop for your next shoot, here are my personal favorite spots across the Richmond area.
Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA)
The VMFA isn’t just for art lovers, it’s a visual treat for photographers too. With clean lines, open spaces, and sculptural elements, this spot offers a modern aesthetic with timeless appeal. The grounds are beautifully maintained year-round, making it a versatile choice for any shoot. Photography has some restrictions indoors but none outside with the beautiful landscaping.
Maymont Italian Gardens
Elegant and romantic, the Italian Gardens at Maymont are full of character. Think stone staircases, blooming roses, and classic balustrades. It’s a favorite for couples and bridal portraits, and the soft golden hour light here is absolutely magical. There are no fees to enter, no restrictions, and no reservations needed.
The Virginia State Capitol
For a classic and polished look, the Capitol grounds offer stately columns, sweeping staircases, and well-manicured lawns. It’s a great spot for professional headshots, graduation photos, or anyone looking to add a touch of grandeur.
Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden
This lush location is like stepping into a fairytale. With vibrant blooms, winding paths, and themed gardens, it’s an ever-changing canvas that works beautifully for families, maternity, and lifestyle shoots throughout the year. There is a fee for entry but no reservations needed.
Historic Pole Green Church
Minimalist and deeply serene, this open-air church is a standout. The architectural structure frames subjects beautifully and creates a sense of quiet reverence and is perfect for more intimate or conceptual shoots. There are no fees, no reservations needed for casual shoots and easy parking.
Common House Richmond
Common House is a private club and event space that can be rented for events or photo shoots by the hour. They have over 10 unique spaces including an outdoor courtyard, indoor restaurant, social hall with a pool table, private rooms, and so much more all with beautiful natural light. This is a perfect indoor space if the weather isn’t good or you want a more controlled environment. There are fees for space rental starting at $100 an hour.
Maymont Park Open Fields
If you love golden hour sessions, these open fields are a dream. Wide, natural, and drenched in soft light at sunset, it’s an ideal location for relaxed portraits, families, and dreamy outdoor sessions.
Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU)
Urban and vibrant, VCU’s campus offers a mix of city textures, student energy, and hidden pockets of charm. It’s a great spot for graduation shoots or anyone wanting a modern, energetic vibe.
Canal Walk
From industrial textures to waterfront views, the Canal Walk has it all. Murals, bridges, and brick pathways make this location dynamic and full of storytelling potential. There’s easy access and cheap/free parking nearby.
Byrd Park Round House
Tucked between four lakes, the Round House is private and has a small garden with an archway. Surrounded by water and greenery, it adds a unique architectural flair and works well for portraits and private elopements.
Maymont Park’s Japanese Garden
Tranquil and meticulously landscaped, the Japanese Garden is one of my favorite hidden gems. With koi ponds, arched bridges, and stone lanterns, it offers an exotic and peaceful atmosphere perfect for elegant, serene photos. There are A LOT of stairs to climb so wear comfortable shoes.
