One of the most common things I hear from couples before a shoot is, “We’re awkward in front of the camera” or “We don’t know how to pose.” And honestly? That’s completely okay. You’re not supposed to know what to do. That’s my job!

When you book a session with me, you’re not just getting someone to snap pretty pictures. You’re getting an experience. One where I guide you through the entire process with gentle, fun prompts that help you feel comfortable, connected, and completely yourselves.

I never expect couples to come with a list of poses or Pinterest boards full of inspiration. I come prepared with ideas, prompts, and the ability to adapt in the moment based on your energy, the vibe of your relationship, and the setting we’re in.

Here are some of my favorite go-to prompts for creating those natural, candid-feeling moments:

“Put your hand on the back of his head.”

This is a great way to show off your ring and create an intimate moment.

“Hold your gown and walk towards me.”

Movement adds life. You’re not posing, you’re just walking and have something to focus your hands and mind on so that you don't overthink.

“Tuck your hair behind your ear.”

A subtle gesture, but it brings focus to the face and gives you something to do with your hands.

“Close your eyes and touch noses.”

It’s sweet, quiet, and creates a moment of closeness that always photographs beautifully.

“Scratch the back of your neck.”

Sounds silly, right? But it makes people laugh, drop their guard, and results in a natural look. Especially for the guys who never know what to do with their hands.

“Take a picture of your new bride.

Letting one partner become the photographer for a moment brings out genuine reactions of love and laughter. It’s gold.

“Everyone smile at each other.”

Perfect for family or group shots where we want connection, not just faces staring straight ahead.

Parents and daughter smiling at each other

“Smile at each other and act like you’re going to touch teeth.”

This one always gets me crazy looks from couples but I promise it looks beautiful. It helps to get that "just before the kiss" moment look and usually leads to some fun laughing photos as well. Trust me.

“Roll up your sleeves.”

A simple motion that creates a casual, relaxed vibe especially during laid-back solo portraits where things can begin to feel stiff.

“Put your arm on the wall and lean in to touch foreheads.”

Feels intimate, cinematic, and romantic and adds visual interest to the frame. It feels spicy and fun in the moment and I love creating an experience for my clients that they'll leave feeling more connected and giggly.

“Take a sip of your drink.”

This one's perfect for receptions or any chill moment. It’s not staged, it’s part of the day.

“Act like you’re holding a skittle.”

This gives you something to do with your hands that looks natural and doesn’t require a prop.

“Hold hands and run towards me.”

This is a fun and playful shot and can get you some of the "blurry" or vintage looking photos as well if that's your style.

Why Prompts Work Better Than Poses

I use prompts like these to help you stay present with each other, not overly focused on the camera. Candid doesn’t have to mean unplanned, it means creating space for real emotion and genuine interaction. Prompts give you just enough direction without forcing anything.

And no, you don’t need to memorize a thing. I tailor everything to you. Every client is different. Some are super playful and loud, others are quieter and serious. I read that energy and create moments that fit your vibe.

The Experience Matters

When you work with me, I want you to walk away saying, “That was actually so fun.” I want you to forget you were even being photographed and just remember how present and connected you felt. You don’t need to come with a plan. Just show up and be yourself. I’ll take care of the rest.
